What is the Lay Training Fund?

The Lay Training Fund (LTF) is a new fund to enable and support Catholic laity to grow in maturity and to make an informed contribution both to the world and to the church.

Who is eligible for the Lay Training Fund?

Any adult residing in the Diocese of Hexham & Newcastle, who wishes to seek further religious formation to discover the lay vocation as leaven in the world, to deepen their personal faith and to enable them to undertake greater and more effective involvement in parish ministries. Normally ongoing formation as a regular part of parish life will continue to be funded by the parish.

What types of courses are eligible for support?

The LTF could be for all areas of adult education and formation. This could include the Limex course and courses run at St. Bede's Institute, Ushaw, amongst others. The suitability of a particular course will be assessed by the Application Sub-committee but will usually involve accreditation. Applications will be assessed using the following criteria:

  • Courses to develop a personal faith commitment, formation and development of the lay vocation the world;
  • Courses that would reinforce learning in support of the strategy of the Diocesan Mission;
  • Courses designed to support training to assist a parish and its needs.

Also taken into account will be:

  • Evidence of an applicant’s current ability level and suitability for the demands of the course;
  • Amount of earlier awards from the LTF.Up to 1/3rd of the cost of an approved application may be awarded.

Where will the money for the Lay Training fund come from?

  • Initial investment from the Diocese.
  • Annual parish collection.
  • Bequests.
