Celebrating the centenary of the birth of Oscar Romero booklet

This booklet is offered to schools by the Diocesan Department for Education to give some background information on Blessed Oscar Romero and some practical suggestions as to how to commemorate the centenary year of his birth.

A plan for schools for the Year of Oscar Romero

The Year of Oscar Romero plan is a suggested approach to celebrating the centenary of Romero’s birth in schools in the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle. Resources will be published each month for schools during the Year of Oscar Romero.

Throughout June we are celebrating the work of Mission Together, the Children’s branch of the Pope's charity, Missio. Blessed Oscar Romero was the National Director of Missio in El Salvador. He urged even his poorest parishioners to 'pray and share' to show solidarity with others living in poverty around the world. Our theme for June is 'Pray and Share' as schools encourage children to help children around the world through their prayers and fundraising.

Throughout the Year there will be a monthly focus linked to the life and sayings of Blessed Oscar Romero:

  • Romero Cross pledge to pray
  • A monthly prayer
  • A liturgy or service
  • A prayer station
  • Ideas for engagement with families and parishes
  • Links to the global and liturgical calendars and charities
  • Resources ideas

Romero Prayer Bag

There is an opportunity to share the story of Oscar Romero and the monthly prayer focus with families by sending home the Romero Prayer bag.
